Physical Education at St Matthias
“I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying”.
“I’ve always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come”.
“Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game”.
– Michael Jordan
Every term at St Matthias the children will have the chance to learn new sporting activities and enhance their skills in the process. This is a fun and an engaging opportunity for all the children to access. We want the children to be happy and excited for when they have P.E. It is crucial for our school that we provide provisions for our children to build on their confidence through such activities. P.E. is taught weekly and children build positive relationships with the adults, who encourage their confidence and physical development.
The role of PE
Physical Educations is vital for young children as it builds leaders, confidence, teamwork, fitness and becomes a major part of their lives, both in and out of school. High quality PE allows children to succeed and enjoy a wide range of physical activity. PE also helps students to develop personally and socially within the school. It enables children to learn through competitive, creative and challenging situations. At St Matthias, our aims for the children are to:
- Encourage a healthy and active lifestyle
- Nurture sportsmanship in all aspects of competition
- Enhance and widen each child’s sporting experience and enjoyment
- Create a passion for PE
- Develop a targeted skill set
- Have role models to look up to
- Help students to reach their physical potential in a variety of sports and their environments
PE Skills
Children develop a range of physical and mental skills, ensuring they have fun during physical education lessons. As a lot of activities are team-based, we pride ourselves on developing sportsmanship and teamwork each day. Each term children learn a new sport to develop their skills in a range of scenarios. Competitions are also in place for the children who show the most improvement and who show their best effort. Each lesson starts with a daily mile to maintain children’s fitness and for the yearly school games challenge; however, children are also be able to have fun, build self-confidence, release energy and improve their PE skills. PE lessons are planned out so that children have the best chance of excelling in Physical Education.
