At St Matthias, pupils learn appropriate letter formation and joins before developing their continuous, cursive handwriting. Once secure, we focus on fluency and writing at speed. We want to ensure the cognitive load for pupils is reduced in the writing process and handwriting support is one of the ways in which we do this.

Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language. At St Matthias, we want to give all pupils the tools to become effective, purposeful speakers and listeners. If pupils can confidently articulate themselves in a wide range of settings, this will enable them to navigate, and interact with, the people and the world around them. Spoken language is the key to so many things from reading and writing to friendships and wellbeing.

Art allows our children to develop their cultural awareness of the world around them, as well as express their own creativity, thoughts and feelings and perspectives.

Spanish learning at St Matthias is based on practical communication and instilling a passion for language learning. Learning a new language is key to becoming part of the global community and we ensure that pupils at St Matthias have a solid foundation for this journey.

At St Matthias, we aim to instil a sense of curiosity and interest within the children surrounding the world around them.

Our music curriculum intends to inspire creativity, self-expression and encourage our pupils on their musical journeys as well as giving them opportunities to connect with others. We hope to foster a lifelong love of music by exposing them to diverse musical experiences and igniting a passion for music. By listening and responding to different musical styles, finding their voices as singers and performers and as composers will encourage every pupil to experience the creativity of music.

Physical Education is taught across the school by our PE Teacher Mr Daniel. Using PE Teacher means that our children are able to increase their knowledge regarding the rules of sports and understand the importance of team work and how fitness affects the body. We place a huge importance on children finding enjoyment in sports and that everyone displays high levels of sportsmanship when faced with challenges.

Religious Education is a core subject at St Matthias, and one which is taught throughout the school. Our Christian message of ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ is underpinned throughout the RE curriculum and in every year group, and we ensure the children build a solid foundation of understanding of their own faith, as well as exploring those of others.

At St. Matthias, we believe that across the school, science should be taught through fun and engaging practical experiments. This means that children are learning through a hands-on approach which encourages questioning, exploration and scientific thinking.

At St Matthias, the PSHE and RSE curriculum is engaging, purposeful, relevant to the real world and equips our pupils with age appropriate knowledge and skills which reflects the needs of our school community. We want to empower our pupils to respect themselves as individuals, whilst developing an understanding, tolerance and acceptance for others and their differences.

Intent: Writing at St Matthias aims to enable all pupils to confidently articulate, structure and write their thoughts, emotions and ideas. Through exploring a wide range of high-quality, language-rich texts in which pupils can see themselves, our aim is to empower all pupils to use their imagination and voice to write confidently. Through being explicitly taught grammar, punctuation, spelling and phonics, children can apply this knowledge to the writing process, ensuring their work is coherent. At St Matthias, we want all pupils to be ambitious writers, who can effectively write for different purposes and who understand the power their writing can carry.
