Art allows our children to develop their cultural awareness of the world around them, as well as express their own creativity, thoughts and feelings and perspectives.

Our pupils learn to be digitally literate and how to be safe online.

We know the importance of encouraging our children to read and having them develop a love of reading and we have designed our reading curriculum to reflect the most important strands of the subject.

The history curriculum at St. Matthias offers children a varied and engaging range of subjects to explore within each year group.

Schools within the Primary Advantage Federation have a strong commitment to children’s maths. Daily maths lessons lay the foundations for this critical life skill as teachers follow the popular and effective PA Maths programme.

Spanish learning at St Matthias is based on practical communication and instilling a passion for language learning. Learning a new language is key to becoming part of the global community and we ensure that pupils at St Matthias have a solid foundation for this journey.

At St Matthias, we aim to instil a sense of curiosity and interest within the children surrounding the world around them.

A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

Physical Education is taught across the school by specialist coaches from BADU Sports. Using sports coaches means that our children are able to increase their knowledge regarding the rules of sports and understand the importance of team work and how fitness affects the body. We place a huge importance on children finding enjoyment in sports and that everyone displays high levels of sportsmanship when faced with challenges.

Religious Education is a core subject at St Matthias, and one which is taught throughout the school. Our Christian message of ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ is underpinned throughout the RE curriculum and in every year group, and we ensure the children build a solid foundation of understanding of their own faith, as well as exploring those of others.

At St. Matthias, we believe that across the school, science should be taught through fun and engaging practical experiments. This means that children are learning through a hands-on approach which encourages questioning, exploration and scientific thinking.
