In Key Stage 1 and 2 the curriculum is made up of core subjects: English, Maths, Science and RE.
The St Matthias curriculum has been designed to make it as engaging as possible, in order to prepare our children for life within and outside of school. We design a high-quality, ambitious curriculum for all pupils, building knowledge and skills from the Early Years all the way to Year 6.
Our curriculum prioritises accurate and fluent word reading, spelling, handwriting and mathematics. We prioritise ‘keeping up’ rather than ‘catching up’, quickly dealing with any identified gaps in pupils’ knowledge.
Reading: We teach a combination of phonics and reading strategies to support with reading. Teaching is rigorous and sequenced to develop pupils’ fluency, confidence and enjoyment.
Writing: We use a high-quality, text-based approach to our writing cycles. All pupils are explicitly taught how to communicate effectively through spoken language, articulate ideas and develop understanding.
Mathematics: We provide high-level maths lessons designed to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Our approach to teaching is based on evidence-informed understanding of effective teaching and how pupils learn. The curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced so that pupils build knowledge and skills sequentially and cumulatively.
Teachers check pupils’ understanding systematically, identify misunderstandings and adapt teaching as necessary. Teaching is sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before.

Staff identify and remove barriers to achievement through effective curriculum design, formative assessment and adapting their practice to meet pupils’ needs. Reasonable adjustments are well targeted and focus on pupils’ long-term success.
