At St Matthias, wellbeing isn’t an add-on — it’s the foundation that allows children to learn, thrive and flourish. We are a diverse, inner-city school and we understand that children bring different experiences, strengths and needs into school each day. Our approach is built on strong relationships, a nurturing culture, and a shared commitment to helping every child feel safe, seen and secure.
We teach children how to understand their feelings, build positive coping strategies, and develop the confidence to use their voice. We also work closely with families because children do best when school and home are connected.
Our Approach
1) Relationships first
Children learn best when they feel safe. Our adults prioritise connection, consistency and warmth. We use everyday moments — at the gate, in the classroom, at lunch — to build trust and belonging.
2) Trauma-informed and inclusive
We recognise that behaviour is communication. We aim to understand the “why” behind behaviour and respond in a way that is calm, fair and supportive. Our staff use consistent language and routines so that children know what to expect, and we adapt our approach for children with additional needs.
3) Building emotional literacy
Children are taught to:
-
name and understand emotions
-
recognise what their body feels like when emotions grow
-
use strategies to regulate (breathing, movement, sensory tools, calm spaces, adult support)
-
repair relationships after conflict
4) A whole-school culture of wellbeing
Wellbeing is woven through our curriculum, collective worship, PSHE/RSE, assemblies, class routines, play, and enrichment.
