he Department for Education (DfE) are spending over £450 million on improving physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools over 3 academic years.
Our school has been awarded £17,404 for the academic year 2024/2025.
We use our Sports Premium funding to further improve PE provision at St Matthias, broaden the sporting opportunities available to our pupils, include as many pupils as possible into competitive sport through entering a wide range of competitions at all age ranges, develop a love of sport and physical activity, identify that sport can support positive mental health, and increase amount of time for physical activities that ensure children ‘get out of breath’.
Our investment includes:
Swimming lessons for Year 4 and Year 5 children for a full year, with a 6-week top-up in summer term for Year 6, giving children lifelong swimming and water safety skills.
Funding the hiring of qualified sports coaches to teach sport in after-school clubs and sports coaches to work over lunchtime to engage children in physical activity, offering a range of sporting activities to encourage healthy choices.
Increasing participation in school sporting competitions including “friendlies” against other schools, working in partnership with the PA Federation and Hackney LA. Last year, 50 children took part in the Hackney Half Marathon.
Investment in professional development for our PE lead and sports coaches, alongside high-quality sports equipment to ensure all children can participate fully in PE activities.
Raising staff awareness of how to support children’s mental health linked to physical activity and mindfulness, and promoting an active lifestyle through sessions and workshops in eating and healthy living for families.
All sporting opportunities and activities funded through the Sports Premium are available to every child at St Matthias. We believe that every pupil should have access to high-quality PE teaching, competitive sport, swimming lessons, and extracurricular sporting activities, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our aim is to develop a love of sport and physical activity in all our pupils.
Our investment has led to a broader range of physical activity during break times, reduced behaviour issues on the playground, with basketball matches now taking place on the playground. We continue to work towards improving swimming attainment and are developing our provision to ensure more children leave primary school as confident swimmers.
