Science Progression of Skills & Knowledge
At St Matthias, we want all of our children to become confident and capable scientists who are able to investigate the world around them and clearly communicate their findings in a range of ways. Our aim is to foster a sense of curiosity about the world while providing children with both the scientific skills and knowledge needed to ask and answer questions which emerge from this curiosity. We want our children to see themselves as scientists, both in the present and within their futures and we aim to provide them with aspirations to work in the field of science.

From the Early Years through to Year 6, children are introduced to a wide range of topics within chemistry, physics and biology. For example, plants; forces and magnets; animals and living things; space, and much more! This means that children are able to develop a broader understanding of different scientific areas and concepts, and build their science knowledge as they grow and move through year groups.

In Science, children will work scientifically to develop the 5 different types of enquiry skills in relationship to their current science topics:

There are so many great resources that you can use to explore Science further. Try them out!

🐝🌼 Buzzing with excitement at Battersea Park Children’s Zoo! 🌼🐝
Our Year 6 pupils had an unforgettable experience stepping into the role of beekeepers for the day. Dressed in full beekeeping suits and veils, they had the opportunity to get up close to the bees and visit the zoo’s apiary—the place where honeybee colonies are kept in their hives.
The children learned about the vital role bees play in pollination, how a hive works as a community, and why protecting these incredible insects is so important for our environment. Their curiosity, bravery and enthusiasm shone through as they met thousands of busy worker bees in action!
A fantastic hands-on learning experience that brought science and nature to life. 🐝🍯🌿

🔬✨ Spectacular Science with the Royal Institution! ✨🔬
What an incredible morning of curiosity, discovery and wonder as our children and their families joined us for a spectacular science show led by science presenter Ted Hill from the Royal Institution. Known for bringing science to life through exciting demonstrations, Ted wowed the audience with a series of fascinating experiments that sparked plenty of amazement, laughter and questions. The Royal Institution`s mission is to inspire young people through engaging, hands-on science experiences, and today`s show certainly did just that.
It was wonderful to see so many children attending alongside their parents and carers, sharing the excitement of scientific discovery together. From explosive reactions to mind-bending demonstrations, the show reminded us all that science is at its best when it is experienced, explored and enjoyed.
A huge thank you to Ted Hill and the Royal Institution for inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators! 🧪⚡🚀
