News from our classes
EYFS
I have been absolutely amazed by how brilliantly our youngest children in Nursery and Reception have settled into life at St Matthias. Starting school, or moving into a new class, is such a big milestone, and they have embraced it with wonderful confidence, curiosity and enthusiasm. From developing their early reading, writing and number skills to exploring the colourful artwork of Yinka Ilori as part of our Black History Month celebrations, they have already achieved so much. Most importantly, it has been a joy to see new friendships blossoming and children beginning to feel that they truly belong. I couldn’t be prouder of them, or more grateful to our wonderful Early Years team for giving them such a happy and nurturing start.

Year 1
What a wonderful start to the year our Year 1 children have had! I have been so impressed by the enthusiasm, curiosity and confidence they have shown as they settle into their new routines. From exploring the adventures of Old Bear and creating their own Victorian peg dolls to investigating everyday materials and becoming budding scientists, their learning has already been full of creativity and discovery. What has particularly struck me is the kindness, maturity and sense of community they are developing, showing our St Matthias values of faith, hope and love in the way they learn and play together. A huge thank you to Ms M and Ms Worley for making the transition into Year 1 feel so happy, calm and seamless. What a brilliant start to year 1.

Year 2
Year 2 have made such a fantastic start to the term, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for learning. From travelling back in time to write with quills and ink like Samuel Pepys, to investigating forces by stretching, twisting and squashing toffee, the children have been learning through some brilliantly creative and memorable experiences. They have also welcomed the London Fire Brigade for an important fire safety workshop. I have particularly loved seeing families joining us for Family Fridays, sharing in the children’s learning and celebrating their achievements. These moments remind us just how special our St Matthias community is. A huge thank you to the Year 2 team for creating such a rich and exciting start to the year. I am so proud of everything the children are already achieving!

Year 3
What a brilliant start to the year our Year 3 children have had! I have been so impressed by their enthusiasm, imagination and determination as they embrace the challenges of Key Stage 2. From becoming archaeologists and discovering ancient artefacts, to investigating magnets and bringing The Iron Man to life through drama and role play, their learning has already been full of excitement and discovery. Their hard work in maths and the care they are taking with their handwriting have also been wonderful to see. And, of course, a special congratulations on bringing home a trophy from their sporting trip! I am so proud of the way the children are growing in confidence, working together and celebrating one another’s achievements. A huge thank you to our Year 3 team for giving them such an inspiring and positive start to the year!

Year 4
What a wonderful start to the year our Year 4 children have had! I have been so impressed by their enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity as they settle into the new term. From exploring the digestive system through practical investigations, to learning about Roman soldiers and describing their clothing in Spanish, the children have already been making some fantastic connections across their learning. They have also been using their imaginations to make predictions about their new class text and enjoying the excitement of their Sports Inspired trip. It has been lovely to see their confidence growing and their willingness to embrace new challenges. A huge thank you to our Year 4 team for making the start of term so engaging and inspiring. I am incredibly proud of the children and all they are achieving!

Year 5
What a fantastic start to the year our Year 5 children have had! I have been so impressed by their enthusiasm, maturity and growing independence as they embrace the challenges of upper Key Stage 2. From exploring the wonders of the British Museum and bringing the history of the Benin Kingdom to life through role play, to describing the planets in Spanish and deepening their understanding of decimals, their learning has already been wonderfully rich and varied. It has also been brilliant to see the children developing their confidence and independence through Bikeability, learning important skills for life beyond the classroom. I am particularly proud of their willingness to challenge themselves and approach new experiences with such curiosity and determination. A huge thank you to our Year 5 team for providing such an exciting and purposeful start to the year. It is wonderful to see the children flourishing!

Year 6
What an exceptional start to the year our Year 6 children have made! I have been so impressed by the maturity, determination and positive attitudes shown by both Faith and Hope classes as they begin their final year at St Matthias. From exploring the powerful story of Rose Blanche through drama and diary writing, to tackling place value with numbers into the millions and creating imaginative creatures in Spanish, the children have already demonstrated such creativity and commitment to their learning. It is particularly wonderful to see them embracing the responsibilities and expectations of Year 6 with such confidence and enthusiasm. With their Ufton Court residential to look forward to, there is so much excitement ahead!
